Researching & Scholarly Essays

How To:
Examples:
  • The first step of a research paper is to choose a topic that you would like to write about.

  • After this, it is time to research scholarly sources to find information for your paper. JSTOR and Ebscohost are great resources.

  • I would suggest creating an outline for your research paper after you have found your sources. This will help to organize your paper.

  • Finally, you are ready to begin writing. Construct your argument through a thesis, supporting facts, and your opinions.

  • One final step should be a full edit and revision of your paper.

"Society has laid out ideas that people are supposed to follow no matter their opinions or desires. Gender is one of these created ideas that not all people choose to believe. One character in Cristina Garcia’s Monkey Hunting is an example of this exactly. The character of Chen Fang illustrates the idea that gender is a socially constructed concept that is not only fueled by a person’s desires, but social norms as well."

This is a portion of an introductory paragraph of a research paper. At the end of the paragraph, the author made sure to include a clear thesis (shown above in a bold font). Crafting a strong thesis will guide your writing throughout your whole paper.

"To understand how gender is a social construction, it is important to first understand what exactly a social construction is. Barbara J. Risman’s “Gender & Society” defines a social construction as something that “constrains and facilitates behavior”, “includes norms”, and “is internalized as identities” (431)."

After her introduction, the author continued to support her thesis with more information. She included quotes from one of her scholarly sources that she researched before writing. The inclusion of the outside source strengthens her argument.
