Telling a story creatively
"Ashley
'Are you pregnant or suffering from anything that is hindering your immune system very much right now?' the x-ray technician asks me. 'No, I’m pretty good,' I say in response with a laugh while thinking, obviously I’m not pregnant; I’m fifteen years old. She better get this done quick, I just wanna go home and go to bed.

Eh, it looks fine, I think as I continue my strides. Counting my laps, I backstroke through the pool at our local gym. Ash sure can be clumsy sometimes though. How did she end up hitting that wall? I try to look over at her and see if she’s still bothering with her thumb. She looks to be going pretty strong though, so she must be fine.
Splash, splash.

Excerpt from Inquiry 3.
The author of this project decided to compose a short story. While her story is non-fiction, she chose to tell it in a non-linear fashion. This was her way of being creative with her writing. She begins the story with one point in time from one character's perspective and then jumps back in time and changes to another character's perspective. She continues her story in this manner; all characters used were meant to enhance the story and explain a message to readers. Using meaningful quotes, characters, and time/perspective changes can add immensely to a creative narrative.

The beauty of a creative assignment is that you have more freedom to write how you want to, if you even want to write. The ways to tell a story creatively are endless. Besides a narrative, stories can be told through images, websites, presentations, and so much more.

How does one tell a story in a creative way?
One suggestion I would make is for each student to try to do his or her project in the way that will best allow for expression. If writing a narrative works best, then do that. If photojournalism if of interest to the student, that might be most successful then. Stick with your strengths and your project will work out for you.

Do you have any tips for students who don't consider themselves to be creative?

Thinking creatively is an important part of your education. Working on an assignment like this will allow you to have more freedom with the project. You'll have more of a choice in what you do. Because of this, the project should be more fun for you.
Why do we need to do a creative project like this?
This is one tricky aspect with creative projects. It is more difficult to set equal standards for all projects when students have more freedoms with them. However, as long as each student meets the requirements of the project, their grade will reflect that. When grading these projects, it will be mostly about the quality of them.
