For many of your assignments, I will expect you to include a cover letter before your work. These serve as a sort of preface to your writing. They are a less formal genre of work to express your thoughts on your writing experience. It is usually good to include how you felt about the piece, details about your writing process, what you struggled/succeeded with, etc. in your cover letter. They are a nice way to introduce your piece and include your personal thoughts on your essay.

Cover Letter Example

"I’m always a fan of research papers so when we were assigned inquiry two, I was kind of looking forward to it. I’ve never had to write a research paper based off of ideas from a book so this was new to me. However, adding in ideas from a novel was pretty useful. Monkey Hunting acted as another source for me to use to prove my thesis. It also made it a little easier to narrow down what I needed to research."

This example is the first paragraph from a student's cover letter introducing a research paper. It begins by outlining personal opinions on this type of writing and gives readers a brief outline of what the rest of the cover letter wil discuss. This is successful because the writer briefly explains her thoughts and struggles with her essay. The rest of the letter then dives deeper into the previously mentioned concerns and successes.
